A disturbing family conflict in Mukono has led to the arrest of a 45-year-old woman, Barbra Babirye, for allegedly attempting to steal her daughter’s one-month-old baby.

Bridget Nalweyiso, 22, gave birth at Mukono General Hospital, with her mother, Babirye, by her side.

After the birth, Babirye persuaded Nalweyiso to temporarily leave the baby in her care. However, things took a dark turn when Babirye began claiming the child as her own.

“I was shocked when I heard she was telling people the baby was hers,” Nalweyiso said in an emotional interview. “She even asked for money from her husband under the false claim that the baby was hers.”

Kimbowa Sonko, the chairperson of Basiima Kikooza cell, stated, “We knew it was Nalweyiso’s baby. She had been visibly pregnant. When Barbra claimed the baby as hers, we couldn’t believe it.”

Nalweyiso reported the incident to Wantoni Police Station, leading to Babirye’s arrest on charges of attempting to steal the child.
