Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta is in Uganda to headline the Second Annual Guild Leaders Summit 2025, held today at Makerere University.
Kenyatta, who served as Kenya’s fourth president from 2013 to 2022, arrived in Kampala on Wednesday evening. He is set to deliver the keynote address at the Yusuf Lule Central Teaching Facility Auditorium.
His speech will center on accountability and ethical leadership—a theme especially relevant to Africa’s next generation of changemakers.
The summit, organized by the Guild Presidents Leadership Academy (GPLA), is running under the theme “Institutional Accountability: The Backbone of Good Governance.”
The event has drawn student leaders from across East Africa and beyond. Partners include Reach A Hand Africa, CIVICUS, UNICAF, and the University Forum on Governance (UNIFOG).
Currently serving as a peace envoy for regional stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia, Kenyatta brings significant continental experience to this youth-focused gathering.
Student Voices Driving the Conversation
The summit isn’t just about high-profile speeches. A dynamic panel discussion will feature student leaders from East African universities:
- H.E. Peace Agutiin Cornelius, Guild President, Makerere University Business School of Technology and Science (BMSOTZ)
- H.E. Andrew Mwebaza, Guild President, University of Rwanda
- Eunice Wawuda, Student Leader, University of Nairobi
- Rt. Hon. Kiruhu Isaac, Guild Speaker, Makerere University
Moderated by Oremo Odwee Hillary, the 88th GRC at Makerere, the panel will explore practical ways universities can implement accountability systems and link them to national leadership.
A Regional Hub for Student Engagement
Today’s event is more than a summit—it’s a convergence of youth influence. From breakout roundtables to cultural showcases, the Makerere campus is alive with debate, collaboration, and visionary thinking.
Delegates from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and beyond are engaging in workshops designed to foster leadership, policy innovation, and ethical governance.
The Guild Leaders Summit is quickly positioning itself as a leading platform for African student leadership.
As Makerere University continues to champion continental conversations, its role as a regional think tank grows ever stronger. The presence of statesmen like Uhuru Kenyatta only amplifies this momentum.
