Over 150 Ugandan rally enthusiasts were flagged off to Kenya on Tuesday for the highly anticipated World Rally Championship (WRC), set to take place from March 20th to 23rd.
The send-off ceremony, held at the Kenyan Embassy in Kololo, was led by Kenya’s Ambassador to Uganda, Joash Maangi, who highlighted the event’s significance for East Africa.
“This championship is a cornerstone for East Africa’s motorsport tourism. Last year, over 10,000 enthusiasts attended, and this year we expect the numbers to surpass 30,000,” Maangi said.
Uganda’s Pride on the Global Stage
Uganda will be represented by two drivers at the Safari Rally Kenya, the third round of this year’s WRC.
Yasin Nasser, behind the wheel of his Ford Fiesta R5, and Timothy Gawaya will carry the nation’s hopes as they compete against over 30 crews from around the world.
“I’m going for enjoyment and expecting fierce competition. Having two Ugandans in the cockpit makes it even more exciting,” said Sandra Nabasirye, one of the rally enthusiasts traveling to Kenya.
A Boost for East Africa’s Motorsport Tourism
The Safari Rally Kenya is not just a sporting event; it’s a catalyst for regional tourism and economic growth. Ambassador Maangi emphasized its role in boosting East Africa’s profile as a motorsport destination.
“This event increases regional market visibility, and Uganda is a key beneficiary. It’s a platform to showcase East Africa’s potential to the world,” he added.

The Safari Rally Kenya is renowned for its challenging terrain and thrilling competition. For Ugandan fans, it’s a chance to cheer on their compatriots while experiencing the adrenaline-pumping action of one of the world’s most prestigious motorsport events.
