Preliminary investigations into the devastating fire at Sunrise Hotel in Old Kampala have revealed shocking negligence.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed that the building lacked a functioning fire extinguisher, contributing to the tragic loss of two lives and extensive property damage.
A Tragedy Unfolds
The fire, which broke out last week at Sunrise Hotel along Rashid Khamis Road opposite Mukwano Mall, left two people dead and several others injured.
Property worth millions was destroyed in the blaze, which started in the hotel’s restaurant before spreading to other parts of the building.
Negligence Exposed
Rusoke highlighted the building’s lack of basic fire safety measures. “The building had a non-functional fire extinguisher. The nearby fire hydrant couldn’t even supply water,” he said.
Further investigations revealed that the building housed a business dealing in highly flammable chemicals on the lower floors. Despite the obvious risks, the owners failed to install a functional fire extinguisher.
A Helpless Situation
When the fire broke out, hotel occupants were left helpless, with many climbing to the upper floors in a desperate attempt to escape. However, the building’s design hindered rescue efforts.
“There was no space for fire trucks to access the building or for ladders to be used to rescue people on upper floors. This highlights the poor manner in which buildings are constructed in Uganda,” Rusoke explained.
A Call for Better Building Standards
The police emphasized the need for improved building standards to support firefighting efforts.
“Buildings should be constructed in a manner that allows for effective firefighting in case of an outbreak,” Rusoke insisted.
What’s Next?
As investigations continue, the Sunrise Hotel tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety measures and proper building construction.
Authorities are urging property owners and developers to prioritize safety to prevent such disasters in the future.
