Shaka Ssali, the legendary Ugandan journalist and longtime host of Straight Talk Africa on Voice of America (VOA), will be cremated on Wednesday April 9th, 2025.
The public viewing of his remains will take place on the same day from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Jefferson Funeral Chapel in Alexandria, Virginia.
Family, friends, and admirers are invited to attend and honor the legacy of the man who shaped African journalism for decades. The announcement was made by NTV journalist and Ssali’s relative, Sudhir Byaruhanga, through a Facebook post.
A Final Farewell
Shaka Ssali, affectionately known as “The Kabale Kid,” passed away on March 27th, 2025, at the age of 71. His fearless reporting and deep insights into African politics earned him global recognition.
Reports indicate that before his passing, he expressed a wish to be cremated. His will reportedly requested that a portion of his ashes be brought back to Uganda, while the rest remain in the United States, where he spent much of his life.
A Lasting Legacy
Throughout his career, Ssali was a champion of free press and democracy. His program Straight Talk Africa provided a platform for in-depth discussions on the continent’s most pressing issues. He mentored a generation of African journalists and remained a respected voice in global media until his final days.
