Ramadan: Dos and Don’ts of Fasting, Health Benefits

As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, Muslims worldwide are preparing for a time of fasting, prayer, and reflection.

Fasting during Ramadan, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, involves abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn to sunset.

3. Engage in Spiritual Activities: Recite the Quran, pray, give charity, and help others to enhance the spiritual benefits of fasting.

4. Break the Fast Promptly at Sunset: Delaying Iftar unnecessarily is discouraged in Islam.

5. Consume Nutritious Foods: A balanced diet helps sustain the body through long fasting hours.

6. Stay Hydrated After Sunset: Drink plenty of water during non-fasting hours to prevent dehydration.

Don’ts of Fasting

1. Avoid Gossip and Negative Speech: Speaking ill of others or engaging in arguments reduces the spiritual reward of fasting.

2. Refrain from Bad Habits: Smoking, lying, and sinful acts invalidate or diminish the impact of fasting.

3. Do Not Overeat at Iftar: Consuming excessive amounts of food at once can lead to digestive issues and discomfort.

4. Avoid Skipping Suhoor: Missing the pre-dawn meal may cause fatigue and weakness during the day.

5. Do Not Waste Time on Distractions: Engaging in unproductive activities takes away from the spiritual purpose of Ramadan.

Best Foods to Break the Fast

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recommended breaking the fast with dates and water. Dates are rich in natural sugars, providing an instant energy boost.

If dates are unavailable, fruits, soup, or light meals are good alternatives. A balanced Iftar should include:

  • Proteins: Eggs, lean meat, or legumes.
  • Healthy Carbohydrates: Whole grains, rice, or bread.
  • Fluids: Water, fresh juices, or soups to replenish hydration.

Ramadan 2025 Key Dates

It is expected that Ramadan 2025 will begin on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025, and end on the evening of Sunday, March 30, 2025.

Eid al-Fitr is predicted to fall on Monday, March 31, 2025. Please note that these dates are dependent on the official sighting of the moon.
