A massive police operation is underway after nine suspects escaped from Jinja Central Police Station (CPS) in the early hours of Sunday, March 30th. Authorities have recaptured one escapee, but the search continues for the remaining fugitives.
Escape Under Investigation
The suspects, initially detained for minor offenses such as affray and public nuisance, broke free under circumstances now being scrutinized by the Kiira Region Police Command. The incident has raised fresh concerns about security measures at the facility.
Kiira Region Police spokesperson James Mubi confirmed the ongoing manhunt and revealed that the rearrested suspect, along with those still at large, will face additional charges for escaping from lawful custody.
“Security protocols at Jinja CPS are under serious review to prevent similar incidents in the future,” Mubi stated, emphasizing that officers found culpable will be held accountable.
Leadership Responds to Security Lapses
Regional Police Commander (RPC) Charles Nsaba underscored the importance of strict command and control within police facilities, cautioning officers against negligence.
“Command, control, and administration must be taken seriously at all police facilities,” Nsaba warned.
This is not the first jailbreak at Jinja CPS. In December 2021, 17 suspected hardcore criminals escaped from the same station, exposing serious security vulnerabilities.
Public Assistance Requested
The police are urging the public to provide any information that could aid in the swift recapture of the fugitives. Authorities have assured citizens that measures are being reinforced to prevent further security breaches.
