The PLU has called off its protest against the Kenyan High Commission following diplomatic outreach, but tensions over media portrayals of Gen. Muhoozi highlight the delicate balance in Uganda-Kenya relations.
The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a group affiliated with Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has called off a planned protest at the Kenyan High Commission in Kampala.
The decision follows diplomatic efforts to address grievances stemming from a controversial report published by Kenya’s Standard Newspaper.

A Controversial Report Sparks Tensions
The PLU had initially planned the protest in response to a February 28, 2025, article in The Standard that the group claimed “attacked” Gen. Muhoozi.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the PLU expressed dissatisfaction with the report, which they viewed as disrespectful to Uganda’s top military officer.
However, after the Kenyan High Commission reached out to Gen. Muhoozi for diplomatic discussions, the PLU decided to cancel the demonstration.
“The planned protest has been called off due to the Kenyan High Commission’s efforts to resolve the matter diplomatically,” the statement read.

Diplomatic Engagements and Historical Tensions
The PLU also claimed that The Standard had apologized for the publication and that Uganda’s and Kenya’s foreign affairs ministries were engaged in discussions to address the issue.
This diplomatic intervention comes against a backdrop of occasional tensions between the two East African neighbors.
The PLU referenced a past incident in which Uganda’s embassy in Kenya was allegedly burned by “errant Kenyans,” accusing the Kenyan government of failing to take action.
Despite these grievances, the group emphasized the importance of maintaining the historically strong ties between Uganda and Kenya.
A Warning to Media
In its statement, the PLU praised Ugandan media for its professionalism and adherence to proper research standards, contrasting it with the Standard’s report.
The group also issued a warning, stating that any future “disparaging stories” about Gen. Muhoozi from Kenyan media would result in similar demonstrations at the Kenyan High Commission in Uganda.
