Uganda’s political landscape has a new player ahead of the 2026 general elections. The People Power Front, a newly registered political party, was officially launched on Thursday at Mestil Hotel in Kampala.
Party Identity and Vision
The party adopts red, black, and gold as its official colors, with members donning red berets. Its symbol is a clenched fist, while its emblem features a right-hand clenched fist inserted into the map of Uganda.
The party’s slogan, “People Power, Our Power,” echoes its mission of empowerment and political change.
Speaking at the launch, party secretary-general Achilles Mukaabi described the event as a significant step toward advancing democracy in Uganda.
“Ugandans have shown great support by signing our registration forms. This is a new force in Uganda’s political arena,” Mukaabi said.
He clarified that the party’s name, symbol, and colors were officially reserved in December 2023.
A Break from NUP?
Mukaabi emphasized that the People Power Front is not a faction of the National Unity Platform (NUP) but rather a continuation of the original People Power movement, which was not formally registered as a political party.
“Our movement had leadership before, but it was unregistered. This is why we have taken the step to formalize our existence,” he explained.
He added that many of the party’s founders come from Uganda’s leading opposition groups, expressing frustration with the country’s political dynamics.
“Many of our members have been disillusioned by Uganda’s political environment, which is marked by extremism, cultism, smear campaigns, blackmail, and intolerance,” Mukaabi noted.
Political Implications
The launch of the People Power Front is likely to stir political debate, given its striking similarities in colors, symbols, and slogans with the NUP, Uganda’s leading opposition party led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.
The development raises questions about potential political realignments ahead of the 2026 elections.
