In a remarkable display of compassion and medical excellence, St. Joseph’s Kitovu Hospital has provided free treatment to over 300 patients suffering from urethral complications.
The specialized medical camp, organized in partnership with the Eulogy Association of Uganda, offered lifesaving screenings and corrective surgeries to individuals battling urinary retention problems—a condition that, if untreated, can lead to severe complications like infections, kidney failure, and incontinence.
A Lifeline for the Vulnerable
For many patients, the camp was a beacon of hope. Among them was Godfrey Ssentongo from Luweero, who had endured a urethral complication for six years.
After countless failed attempts to find treatment elsewhere, Ssentongo finally found relief at Kitovu Hospital.
“I had lost hope after several failed attempts to get treatment. This surgery has changed my life, and I am forever grateful to Kitovu Hospital,” he shared, his voice filled with emotion.
The Scope of the Problem
Dr. Godfrey Kimbugwe, a surgical specialist at Kitovu Hospital, explained that many of the cases involved children born with congenital urethral defects and elderly men suffering from urethral strictures caused by aging or infections.
“Many of these conditions can be corrected with timely medical intervention. Unfortunately, due to lack of awareness and financial constraints, many people suffer in silence until the condition worsens,” Dr. Kimbugwe said.
He emphasized the importance of early medical intervention, urging those experiencing urinary difficulties to seek help before complications arise.
How the Camp Made a Difference
The Eulogy Association of Uganda played a pivotal role in ensuring the camp’s success. By subsidizing costs and providing free surgeries, the association made specialized care accessible to those who could not afford it.
Patients expressed profound gratitude for the initiative.
One beneficiary remarked, “This hospital has given us a second chance at life. We pray that such initiatives continue so that more people can receive the help they need.”
The Bigger Picture: A Call for Awareness and Support
The success of the camp has highlighted the urgent need for increased awareness and support for urethral health.
Doctors at Kitovu Hospital are calling for more initiatives like this to ensure that no one suffers needlessly from treatable conditions.
“We’ve seen how transformative timely medical care can be. But there are still many out there who need help. We need more awareness campaigns and funding to reach them,” Dr. Kimbugwe added.
Buoyed by the camp’s success, Kitovu Hospital plans to organize more such initiatives in the future. The goal is to expand access to specialized care, particularly for underserved communities.
For the 300+ patients who received treatment, the camp was more than just a medical intervention—it was a restoration of dignity, hope, and quality of life.
