Opio Alex Elected 24th Guild President of Gulu Univesity

Opio Alex celebrated victory after Gulu University guild elections

Gulu University has a new student leader. Opio Alex Ongom, a Faculty of Medicine student, has been elected the 24th Guild President after a tightly contested race that drew record student turnout.

The results, officially announced by the Guild Electoral Commission on April 5, 2025, confirmed Opio’s victory with 1,294 votes, beating out three other contenders.

His closest rival, Openyrwot Brian, secured 898 votes, while Odong Steward Howard and Obara Ronald David trailed with 387 and 232 votes respectively.

Students flocked to the polls in large numbers, reflecting growing interest in student leadership and the rising demand for accountable representation. Many viewed this election as a shift in momentum—particularly because it delivered a rare victory for a medical student.

“This win is not just mine, but for every student who believes in balanced leadership,” Opio said after his win. “Medical students are often seen as too busy for politics, but today we’ve proven that leadership is everyone’s business.”

Opio’s win marks a historic moment for the Faculty of Medicine, long underrepresented in the university’s political landscape.

Due to the demanding nature of their coursework and clinical rotations, medical students have traditionally stayed away from guild politics. But Opio’s win shows that change is possible—and students are ready for it.

Over the next year, Opio will be tasked with representing the interests of the entire student body. From academic concerns to welfare and campus facilities, the new guild president will serve as the key bridge between students and the university administration.

University authorities have applauded the peaceful conduct of the election and praised students for their active participation. A swearing-in ceremony is expected in the coming weeks to officially install Opio into office.

With fresh leadership and high expectations, all eyes will now be on Opio and his team to see how they tackle pressing student issues. From library space to mental health support and tuition concerns, the new guild government has its work cut out.

“We’ll lead with purpose, and we’ll listen to every voice,” Opio pledged, promising a student-led administration grounded in transparency, service, and results.
