Okwi Hangs Up His Cranes Boots After 15 Glorious Years

Uganda cranes captain Emmaniel Okwi retires from International Football at age 32

Uganda Cranes captain Emmanuel Okwi has announced his retirement from international football, marking the end of a remarkable 15-year career.

The forward, who claims to be 32, confirmed his decision in an emotional social media statement, saying it’s time to make way for the next generation.

“Representing my country on the international stage has been a fulfilling dream. Donning the Uganda Cranes shirt always left a special feeling, and captaining our team was an absolute privilege and honour,” Okwi wrote.

A Legacy of Leadership and Goals

Okwi made his debut in 2009 under coach Bobby Williamson and quickly became a key player for the Cranes.

He finished as the second top scorer in the 2010 CECAFA Cup with four goals in five matches and tied for the top scorer title the following year with five goals.

Despite missing Uganda’s historic return to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2017 after a 39-year absence, Okwi played a pivotal role in the 2019 campaign in Egypt, scoring twice in four matches.

Over his career, he earned 95 caps and netted 28 goals, cementing his place as one of Uganda’s most prolific forwards.

Why Now?

Okwi pointed to Uganda’s bright football future as a reason for stepping aside. With East Africa set to host the CHAN tournament in August and AFCON in 2027, he believes it’s time for young talent to shine.

“An exciting new era for Ugandan football is coming up with many young footballers emerging. That is why, having cherished all those memories, I believe it’s time for me to bow out and pave the way for our talented young players,” he said.

Gratitude and Farewell

In his statement, Okwi expressed heartfelt thanks to fans, his family, and the coaches who shaped his career. He singled out Bobby Williamson, the man who gave him his national team debut, for special recognition.

As Okwi hangs up his boots, his legacy as a leader, goal scorer, and inspiration to young Ugandan footballers remains intact.

The Uganda Cranes will undoubtedly miss his presence on the pitch, but his decision to step aside ensures the team’s future is in capable hands.
