The National Unity Platform (NUP) is gearing up for the 2026 elections with a clear strategy: strengthen grassroots structures and mobilize support from the ground up.
In a significant move, the party has elected a 15-member Kabale District Mobilization Taskforce Committee to lead its efforts in the region.
Held at the NUP offices along Nyerere Avenue in Kabale Municipality, the elections were presided over by Jolly Jackie Tukamushaba, the party’s Western Region Vice President.
The newly elected leaders are tasked with a critical mission—building NUP’s presence in Kabale and ensuring the party’s agenda resonates with voters.
Meet the New Leadership
The elections saw Derrick Katebire emerge as the Kabale District NUP Chairperson, with Augustine Rukundo as his deputy. Other key leaders include:
- Luke Twesigye – General Secretary
- Cleophas Atuheire – Publicity Secretary
- Devis Kabyesiza – Finance Secretary
The committee also includes mobilizers for specific demographics, such as women, youth, persons with disabilities, and the informal sector.
This diverse leadership team reflects NUP’s commitment to inclusive representation.
A Focus on Grassroots Mobilization
Derrick Katebire, the newly elected chairperson, emphasized the importance of grassroots mobilization in his post-election remarks.
“As NUP Kabale, we previously had appointed structures at the district level. Today, we have formalized our leadership by electing both district and constituency mobilization committees,” Katebire said. “We are confident that these structures will help us spread our agenda, mobilize support, and strengthen NUP’s presence at the grassroots.”
This formalized structure is a strategic move to ensure the party’s message reaches every corner of the district.
Vote Protection: A Top Priority
Jolly Jackie Tukamushaba highlighted vote protection as a key challenge for NUP in the region. She described the Kigezi region as a “hub for election rigging” rather than an NRM stronghold.
“Our main focus is on protecting the vote,” Tukamushaba stated. “Those elected will be responsible for safeguarding it until results are declared. We are certain that in 2026, there will be a wave of change in the western region.”
This emphasis on electoral integrity underscores NUP’s determination to ensure a fair and transparent voting process.

Building a United Front
Tukamushaba urged the newly elected leaders to prioritize transparency, cooperation, and unity. She stressed that their leadership will be instrumental in strengthening party structures and increasing NUP’s support in Kabale.
“Your role is not just about winning elections,” she said. “It’s about upholding the party’s principles and working together to form the next government.”
A Nationwide Mobilization Drive
The Kabale elections are part of NUP’s broader strategy to conduct mobilization elections across various districts.
As the country prepares for the 2026 elections, the party is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to build a robust and organized grassroots network.
With a clear focus on inclusivity, transparency, and vote protection, NUP is positioning itself as a formidable contender in the upcoming elections.
