NRM Confident of Victory in Kawempe By-Election – Odoi

NRM expects victory in the Kawempe by-election, despite security concerns and opposition criticism, says Tanga Odoi.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) remains confident about securing victory in the upcoming Kawempe North by-election, even as concerns mount over the conduct of security forces during the electoral process.

Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairman of the NRM Electoral Commission, voiced his assurance, stating:

“NRM is going to win in Kawempe. The mistakes police are making may give the opposition an edge, but when you go to neutral observers, we are ahead.”

Warning Against Misuse of Party Symbols

Odoi also cautioned independent candidates against using NRM symbols, emphasizing that such actions could mislead voters and create confusion in the election.

Security Issues Cloud Electoral Process

The by-election, scheduled for March 13, 2025, follows the passing of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya. However, the nomination process has been marred by violence and allegations of human rights violations.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa condemned reports of torture and intimidation, labeling the security operatives involved as “enemies of the state.”

Adding to the controversy, the presence of the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JATT) in Kawempe has raised eyebrows. Masked operatives have been accused of using excessive force, particularly during the nomination of National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola.

As election day approaches, the NRM remains determined to clinch the seat, even as concerns persist regarding security and the overall electoral environment.
