Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda of Buganda has called on the Ugandan government to allocate more resources to mental health services, emphasizing the urgent need to support individuals, particularly youth, battling mental health challenges.

Speaking at the launch of the Queen’s Ball event at Bulange, Mengo, the Nnabagereka highlighted the devastating impact of societal stigma on those suffering in silence.

“We must provide better support for those facing mental health issues, especially the youth, to ensure fewer people suffer in isolation,” she said.

Queen’s Ball 2025: A Fundraiser for Mental Health

Scheduled for May 2025 at Speke Resort Munyonyo, the Queen’s Ball aims to raise significant funds to improve mental health care services, with a focus on children, youth, and women.

The Nnabagereka emphasized that the funds will help young people lead fulfilling lives despite their challenges.

“It is crucial that we come together to support this cause and ensure mental health services are accessible to all who need them,” she added.

Experts Sound the Alarm on Youth Mental Health

Dr. Juliet Nakku Mubiru, Director of Butabika Mental Health Hospital, echoed the Nnabagereka’s concerns, citing the rising prevalence of mental health issues among Uganda’s youth.

“The mental health challenges facing our young people are becoming more pronounced, and urgent attention is needed,” she said.

Dr. Nakku attributed the crisis to external factors, including trauma in communities like Karamoja, and stressed the need for enhanced support and resources.

A Unified Effort to Combat Stigma

Suzan Lubega, Head of the Nnabagereka Women’s Fund, confirmed that this year’s campaign will focus on mental health support for vulnerable groups.

“This campaign will direct all efforts toward addressing the mental health challenges deeply impacting children, youth, and women,” she said.

The Queen’s Ball provides a platform for Ugandans to unite in support of mental health initiatives.

Organizers are urging the public to donate generously and participate in large numbers to help raise the necessary funds.
