Nile Breweries Cuts Water Use by 40% in Mbarara

Nile Breweries Mbarara plant

Mbarara, Uganda – In a major sustainability win, Nile Breweries Limited (NBL) has reduced water usage at its Mbarara brewery by 40% since 2013, setting a new benchmark for eco-conscious brewing in Uganda.

The announcement came during World Water Day celebrations, where George Odong, Brewing Manager at Mbarara Brewery, revealed how innovative water-saving measures have transformed operations while safeguarding River Rwizi, the plant’s primary water source.

How NBL Achieved the 40% Cut

Odong credited the milestone to:
✔ Advanced water treatment systems – Recycling and purifying water for reuse in production.
✔ High-efficiency cooling tech – Minimizing waste during brewing.
✔ Automated processes – Optimizing every drop used.

“Water is vital for brewing and communities. We’re committed to using it responsibly,” Odong said. “Our goal is to keep shrinking our water footprint without compromising quality.”

Saving River Rwizi – A Shared Mission

Beyond the brewery, NBL has partnered with WWF Uganda, the Ministry of Water and Environment, and local communities to restore River Rwizi’s ecosystem. Key efforts include:

  • Planting bamboo trees along 27 km of riverbank to prevent erosion and improve water quality.
  • Restoring 25+ hectares of degraded land.
  • Installing rainwater harvesters for 1,000+ households to reduce reliance on the river.

“Healthy rivers mean sustainable brewing,” said Clare Asiimwe, NBL Corporate Affairs Manager“We’re tackling water security holistically—from conservation to livelihoods.”

With Uganda’s water scarcity risks growing ([cite national stats if available]), NBL’s model proves industrial growth and environmental care can coexist.

The brewery’s efforts also align with global sustainability goals, positioning Uganda’s beer industry as a leader in green manufacturing.
