Nigerian light-heavyweight boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju tragically collapsed and died during a match against Ghanaian opponent Jonathan Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on March 29, 2025.

Olanrewaju, widely known as “Success,” was a former National and West African light-heavyweight champion. He was leading on points during the Fight Night 15 event of the Ghana Professional Boxing League when the fatal incident occurred.

Sudden Collapse and Medical Response

Reports indicate that Olanrewaju suffered what appeared to be a cardiac arrest. A widely circulated video on social media showed the moment he collapsed in the ring, triggering immediate panic among fans and officials.

Medical personnel rushed to his aid, providing first aid before transferring him to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead 30 minutes after arrival.

Boxing Community in Mourning

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) confirmed his death, sending shockwaves across the boxing community in West Africa.

The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control’s general secretary, Remi Aboderin, described Olanrewaju as a “fearless” warrior who gave everything to the sport.

“We are really devastated,” Aboderin told BBC Sport Africa. “[This] is not something we envisaged. We will stand by the family during this difficult time.”

Olanrewaju’s Legacy and Career

Olanrewaju turned professional in 2019 and quickly rose through the ranks, securing national and West African light-heavyweight titles.

His official record before the bout stood at 13 wins, 9 losses, and 2 draws, with 12 victories coming by knockout.

The tragic incident has sparked renewed discussions about the safety measures in combat sports. The GBA has announced a thorough investigation to ensure all protocols were followed during the fight.
