In a major step toward modernizing local law enforcement, Nakaseke District Police has launched a dedicated K9 unit to enhance crime prevention, investigations, and emergency response operations across the region.
The announcement, made in a public notice on Tuesday, highlighted the strategic importance of deploying trained sniffer dogs—commonly referred to as K9s—to support local policing efforts in both rural and peri-urban areas.
“This addition enhances our capabilities in crime prevention, search and rescue operations, and maintaining public safety,” the statement from Nakaseke Police read in part.
These specially trained dogs are equipped to track suspects, detect drugs and explosives, and assist in locating missing persons.
Their presence is expected to significantly improve the district’s efficiency in responding to criminal incidents, especially in areas where limited resources have historically hampered quick action.
Local authorities are confident the K9 unit will act as a deterrent to crime and reinforce public trust in security forces. They also stressed the importance of community collaboration in making the initiative a success.
“We urge residents to report crimes promptly, support our investigations, and participate in community policing programs. This is how we make Nakaseke safer, together,” said a local officer involved in the project.
Civil society groups and local leaders have applauded the move, noting that the K9 unit addresses long-standing gaps in law enforcement capabilities.
For communities that have struggled with delayed police responses or weak forensic support, the K9 addition signals a welcome change.
“This is a clear sign that the Uganda Police Force is serious about decentralizing and modernizing its operations,” said a representative from a Nakaseke-based community watchdog group. “People are already feeling more secure knowing help can arrive faster and with the right tools.”
The deployment of K9s is part of a wider national strategy to expand Uganda’s security infrastructure beyond major urban centers. By enhancing localized responses and encouraging civic engagement, the Uganda Police Force aims to build stronger, safer communities.
