Museveni Summons NRM MPs to State House Over Budget, Military Courts

NRM MPs will gather at State House Entebbe for key caucus meeting on May 2, 2025

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary Caucus is set for a crucial meeting at State House, Entebbe, on Friday, May 2, 2025, at 12pm.

The confirmation came from Denis Hamson Obua, Government Chief Whip and Chairperson of the NRM Parliamentary Caucus.

“This serves to inform you that the NRM Parliamentary Caucus shall meet on Friday, May 2, 2025, at State House, Entebbe at 12pm,” he stated.

NRM Members of Parliament (MPs) have been urged to adjust their schedules to attend the meeting, with a formal notice expected to follow shortly.

The gathering will tackle two pressing matters: the 2025/26 National Budget and a controversial bill attempting to reverse a Supreme Court ruling made on January 31, 2025.

The ruling, which declared that military courts could not try civilians, has sparked a legal and political storm.

The proposed bill seeks to grant military courts the jurisdiction to try civilians in specific cases, a move that has ignited fierce debate. Supporters argue the bill is essential for national security, while critics contend it could infringe on civilian rights and pave the way for possible abuses.

Another major item on the agenda is the 2025/26 National Budget. With rising inflation and increased costs of living, MPs will face the challenge of addressing the country’s economic hurdles, particularly in infrastructure and the social sector.

As the ruling party, the NRM’s dominant majority in Parliament will play a pivotal role in shaping and passing the national budget, which will lay out the government’s priorities for the upcoming fiscal year.

Both the budget and the military court bill are set to dominate parliamentary discussions, with significant implications for Uganda’s legal and governance frameworks.

The NRM’s position on these issues will have a lasting influence on the direction of the nation in the months to come.
