Museveni Pledges Special Fund for Fishermen to Boost Livelihoods

Local leaders and farmers attending President Museveni’s PDM assessment tour in Bunyoro

President Yoweri Museveni has announced plans to create a special fund for fishermen, aimed at improving their livelihoods and addressing the high costs of fishing equipment.

The announcement came during his visit to Titus Tumusiime’s farm in Buliisa District, as part of his performance assessment tour of the Parish Development Model (PDM) in the Bunyoro sub-region.

Why a Special Fund?

Museveni acknowledged that the current PDM funds are insufficient for fishermen to purchase essential tools like boats and fishing nets.

“The fishermen’s tools are expensive. The PDM money isn’t enough for them. We shall create other funds for them,” he stated.

The President also resolved to meet with fishing community leaders in May 2024 to discuss the initiative further.

Support for Farmers

During the visit, Museveni commended Tumusiime for being a model farmer and contributed Shs10 million to help him buy a tuk-tuk for transporting pig feeds and Shs25 million for a grinder.

Tumusiime, a PDM beneficiary, shared how the program transformed his life, enabling him to earn Shs4.3 million from pig farming.

Resolving Lake Albert Disputes

Museveni also addressed ongoing disputes over Lake Albert, urging local leaders to take an active role in resolving conflicts. He promised to organize a stakeholders’ meeting in May to discuss the lake’s challenges.

Recognition of Bugungu Kingship

The President clarified his stance on the Bugungu Kingship (Butebengwa), stating he has no issues with its recognition.

He pledged to facilitate a meeting between the Butebengwa team and the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom to resolve any outstanding issues.

A Boost for Poverty Alleviation

Local leaders, including Allan Atugonza, praised Museveni for poverty alleviation programs like PDM, which have significantly improved livelihoods.

Tumusiime’s success story highlights the program’s impact, with his pig farming venture generating substantial income.
