President Yoweri Museveni has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sports infrastructure development, emphasizing its role in Uganda’s successful bid to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

During a tour of Bunyoro region, the President and First Lady Janet Museveni, who also serves as Minister of Education and Sports, inspected the ongoing construction of Hoima Stadium, a key project in Uganda’s AFCON preparations.

Why Hoima?

Initially, the government considered developing Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira for its historical significance.

However, Hoima emerged as the preferred site due to its strategic advantages, including an upcoming airport that will ensure seamless accessibility for teams and fans during the tournament.

“I would like to congratulate the people of Hoima on these significant infrastructure improvements that will boost the local economy,” President Museveni stated during the inspection.

AFCON 2027: A Catalyst for Growth

The development of Hoima Stadium is more than just a sports project—it’s a catalyst for economic and social transformation. The stadium is expected to:

  • Create jobs: From construction workers to hospitality staff, the project is already generating employment opportunities.
  • Boost tourism: With thousands of fans expected to flock to Hoima, local businesses stand to benefit significantly.
  • Enhance sports facilities: The stadium will provide world-class training and competition venues for local athletes.

A Call for Private Sector Investment

President Museveni urged the private sector to seize the opportunity by investing in hotels, restaurants, and other amenities to accommodate the anticipated influx of visitors.

“The government is doing its part, but we need the private sector to complement these efforts. This is a chance to showcase Uganda’s hospitality and unlock the region’s economic potential,” he said.

AFCON 2027: A Regional Affair

Uganda will co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania, marking a historic moment for East Africa.

The tournament is expected to attract millions of viewers and tourists, putting the region on the global sports map.

Hoima Stadium, with its modern facilities and strategic location, will play a pivotal role in ensuring the event’s success.
