Residents and business owners in Mukono Municipality are outraged over a month-long power outage that has left more than six villages in darkness. The blackout has disrupted livelihoods, crippled businesses, and fueled insecurity.
Businesses on the Brink of Collapse
The affected areas—Ngandu, Kigombya, Gunga, Namumira, Kitega, Wantoni, and Kikooza—have been without electricity for weeks. Entrepreneurs who rely on power to run their businesses are struggling to survive, with many on the verge of financial collapse.
David Musisi, a local salon owner, is reeling from losses after taking a Shs 2 million loan to expand his business. With no electricity, he fears defaulting on his loan payments.
Similarly, Barnabas Mujuni, who runs a welding workshop and hardware store, has been unable to fulfill customer orders for three weeks. With mounting rent arrears and lost clients, his business is in crisis.
Bars and entertainment spots have also taken a hit. Ivan Mutyaba, a bar owner, reports dwindling customer numbers as patrons seek venues with functioning refrigeration and entertainment.
Rising Security Concerns
Beyond economic hardships, insecurity is escalating. Area Councilor Isaac Kalyango of Mukono Central Division warns that break-ins and attacks on pedestrians have increased due to the blackout. Residents now fear walking home after dark.
The outage has also cut off communication, making it difficult for locals to stay informed about national events and emergencies.
Authorities Urged to Act
Ngandu village chairman Ibrahim Kitenda has called on authorities to resolve the crisis, warning that frustrated residents may take to the streets in protest.
In response, Assistant Resident District Commissioner Godfrey Mwogeza has urged patience, citing the ongoing transition of power supply from UMEME to Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL).
He has also encouraged local leaders to enhance security through community WhatsApp groups and night patrols.
With businesses suffering and security deteriorating, Mukono residents are demanding immediate intervention to restore power and bring normalcy back to their lives.
