Mufti Mubaje Launches Lugazi Muslim Imams Association to Promote Self-Reliance

Mubaje speaks at the launch of Lugazi Muslim Imams Association

The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has officially launched the Lugazi Muslim Imams Association (LALMA), a grassroots initiative aimed at empowering Muslim religious leaders through unity, economic self-reliance, and community development.

Represented by the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) Secretary for Religious Affairs, Sheikh Imran Abdu-noor Ssali, the Mufti praised the formation of the association as “appropriate and timely,” applauding the Imams for taking proactive steps toward organized progress.

Sheikh Ssali offered practical guidance on sustainability, urging the Imams to develop a realistic work plan and budget that fits within their means. He warned against cultivating a culture of dependence.

“The idea of being self-reliant strengthens your personal esteem, as well as the esteem of those you lead,” he said.

He advised members to begin with small-scale income-generating ventures like rearing poultry or planting jackfruit trees, later pooling resources for larger initiatives such as goat farming.

“Imagine, we already have a ready market for goats and other domestic animals, especially during Eid Adhu (the Feast of Sacrifice),” he noted.

The Mufti’s representative emphasized transparency, focus, and unity as the pillars of LALMA’s long-term success. He also urged collaboration with local government and utilization of poverty alleviation programs like the Parish Development Model.

Responding to requests for transport support, Sheikh Ssali pledged to advocate for a vehicle for the District Kadhi and encouraged County Sheikhs to mobilize annual contributions from the Muslim faithful to purchase motorcycles to support their work.

Before closing, Sheikh Ssali introduced Sheikh Ahmad Mukungu from the UMSC Majlis Al Ulama (College of Eminent Sheikhs), who addressed the recent re-election of Sheikh Mubaje.

He assured attendees that the process was fully constitutional and urged them to disregard false claims circulating on social media.

Also present were Sheikh Mustafa Khamis Lule, Regional Assistant to the Mufti for East Buganda, and Mr. Sadiq Muhairwe, East Buganda Regional Secretary, among other dignitaries.

The launch of LALMA signals a renewed focus on empowering Uganda’s religious leaders through community-driven development and strategic collaboration.
