MTN Uganda has donated computers and classroom furniture worth UGX 20 million to St. Mary Gorreti Secondary School, Ngetta, through its MTN Changemakers initiative. The contribution aims to improve learning conditions for students with visual impairments.
The school, founded by Itinga Charity Education Foundation (ICEF) in 2023, currently serves Senior One and Senior Two students, with 45 learners enrolled. Among them, 10 are completely blind, while 12 have partial blindness.
Assistive Technology for Inclusive Education
The donation includes three desktop computers installed with Braille JAWS software, allowing visually impaired students to access digital learning tools.
Additionally, MTN provided 40 desks, creating 80 extra learning spaces to accommodate students in a more comfortable environment.
At the handover ceremony, MTN’s Regional Business Manager for Northern Uganda, Brian Kagwisagye, emphasized the company’s commitment to inclusive education.
“Education is a powerful tool for empowerment, yet many learners with disabilities face barriers. Our support ensures that no child is left behind. Through technology and infrastructure, we aim to help these students pursue their ambitions unhindered,” he stated.
Part of MTN’s Broader Commitment
This donation falls under the MTN Foundation and aligns with MTN Uganda’s Ambition 2025 strategy, which promotes digital and financial inclusion, as well as quality education.
It also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
ICEF Executive Director Acen Kevin welcomed MTN’s support, noting its impact on the students’ education.
“This initiative will significantly enhance the learning experience of visually impaired students. MTN Uganda is not just addressing immediate challenges but also laying the foundation for a more inclusive education system,” Acen said.
Investing in Community Development
The MTN Changemakers Initiative, now in its second edition, is investing UGX 500 million in 25 projects across Uganda. The program supports initiatives in education, health, and economic empowerment.
Other beneficiaries include:
- Pediatric cancer care at the Bless a Child Foundation
- Education programs under the 40 Days Over 40 Smiles Foundation
- Vocational training at Hands of Hope Skilling Centre in Iganga
- Empowering Single Mothers and Deprived Children in Education (ESMDCE) in Kabarole.
Last year, MTN Uganda invested UGX 500 million in similar community-driven projects, reinforcing its long-term commitment to transforming lives.
