In a bold move to transform education in rural Uganda, MTN Uganda has unveiled a state-of-the-art classroom block at Ocokican Community Secondary School in Soroti District.
The Shs327 million project, funded through the MTN Foundation, includes two classrooms, a fully equipped laboratory, 60 desks, 10 lab tables, 60 stools, a water harvesting system, two sanitary facilities, and a borehole.
This initiative is part of MTN Uganda’s Ambition 2025 strategy, which focuses on enhancing education quality, promoting digital inclusion, and improving community livelihoods.
It also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which advocates for inclusive and equitable education for all.
A New Dawn for Ocokican Community
Ocokican Community Secondary School, established in 2022, was born out of necessity. Before its inception, students had to trek 10 to 15 kilometers to access secondary education—a journey that deterred many from pursuing their studies.
Since its founding, the school has seen a remarkable 79% increase in enrollment, from 67 to 120 students in just six months.
The new facilities are expected to further boost enrollment and retention, providing students with a conducive learning environment.

MTN Uganda’s Vision: Education as a Catalyst for Change
At the commissioning ceremony, MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge emphasized the transformative power of education.
Quoting Nelson Mandela, she said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
“This new school block is more than just a building; it represents a foundation of hope and the beginning of a brighter future for the students and the entire community,” Mulinge added.
The project underscores MTN Uganda’s belief that access to quality education is a cornerstone of community development.
By equipping students with modern facilities, the company aims to empower young minds to shape their futures and contribute to national progress.
What’s Inside the New Block?
The newly inaugurated block is a game-changer for Ocokican Community Secondary School. Key features include:
- Two spacious classrooms: Providing a comfortable learning environment for over 120 students.
- Fully equipped laboratory: Enabling practical, hands-on learning in science subjects.
- Water harvesting system and borehole: Ensuring reliable access to clean water for students and staff.
- Sanitary facilities: Promoting hygiene and health within the school.

MTN’s Broader Impact on Education
The Ocokican project is part of MTN Uganda’s wider commitment to improving education nationwide.
Over the years, the company has invested in schools like Salama School for the Blind in Mukono, Horizon International High School in Isingiro, and Aspire High School in Ibanda District.
These efforts reflect MTN’s dedication to creating inclusive learning environments and ensuring that every child, regardless of their location, has access to quality education.
What’s Next for Ocokican?
With the new facilities, Ocokican Community Secondary School is poised to become a model institution in Soroti District.
The school’s leadership plans to leverage the resources to improve academic performance and attract more students.
For MTN Uganda, this project is a testament to its mission of driving digital and social inclusion.
As Sylvia Mulinge aptly put it, “When young minds are given the right tools and environment, they will rise to the occasion and shape the future.”
