Television personality Miles Rwamiti has officially declared his bid for the Nakawa West parliamentary seat in the 2026 elections.
Running on the National Resistance Movement ticket, Rwamiti is confident he can unseat current MP and Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi.
Speaking on Sanyuka TV, Rwamiti confirmed his ambitions. “Yes, I’m coming for the Nakawa West seat where there’s Ssenyonyi,” he asserted. He defended his decision to align with the ruling NRM, stating, “I subscribe to a good cause and believe in NRM. You can’t fight the dictator without being close to them.”
Rwamiti’s political journey has seen a shift in allegiance. Previously associated with the opposition Forum for Democratic Change, he defected to the NRM last year.
Hajjat Hadijja Namyalo, coordinator of the Office of the National Chairman, announced his move at his graduation dinner, saying, “Yes, we fished Rwamiti from FDC. He is now ours, and we will definitely support him in what he decides to do in 2026.”
This isn’t Rwamiti’s first political battle. In 2021, he contested for the Hoima East parliamentary seat but faced a crushing defeat, securing only 149 votes against Patrick Mwesigwa Isingoma. The loss sparked widespread ridicule on social media.
As the 2026 elections approach, Rwamiti faces an uphill task. Ssenyonyi, a formidable opponent and a key figure in the National Unity Platform, remains popular in Nakawa West.
Whether Rwamiti’s switch to the ruling party will boost his chances or backfire remains to be seen.
