KAMPALA, Uganda — Popular city nightclub Mezo Noir is set to reopen this April 2025, following weeks of closure tied to the tragic death of 23-year-old Martha Ahumuza Murari.
The club made the announcement on April 5, confirming that law enforcement had concluded its investigation and cleared all staff of wrongdoing.
The nightclub had voluntarily suspended operations on March 21, one day after Martha collapsed inside the venue. Her sudden collapse in the bar area sparked widespread speculation, with early reports alleging her drink may have been spiked. She was rushed to Kampala Hospital, placed on life support, and sadly passed away.
The incident shocked the nightlife community and prompted immediate scrutiny. Two individuals, Edward Mugabo, a Mezo Noir cashier, and his brother Joseph Kalenzi, were detained during the investigation. Both were reportedly involved in rushing Martha to the hospital.
However, after weeks of inquiries, no evidence was found linking them or any other staff members to her death. Police officially cleared the club of criminal liability, and both men were released.
In a statement released on April 4, Mezo Noir management expressed deep sorrow over Martha’s death and reaffirmed their commitment to safety.
“We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Martha Ahumuza Murari,” the club stated. “We remain committed to upholding the highest safety standards for our guests.”
They also dismissed rumors circulating in the media about alleged staff involvement, urging the public to rely on verified information and avoid speculation.
Although a specific reopening date has not been revealed, preparations are underway for the club’s return. Management emphasized that new safety measures will be introduced to enhance patron security.
The incident has sparked wider conversations around safety in Kampala’s nightlife.
Stakeholders are now calling for better surveillance, stricter drink monitoring, and improved emergency response in entertainment venues.
For Mezo Noir, reopening marks a new chapter, one defined by caution, responsibility, and the shared duty to protect lives while celebrating nightlife.
