A massive fire broke out at the Suppliers World warehouse along Zikusooka Road in Jinja City, causing millions of shillings in damages and sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky.
The blaze, which started around 2 PM, threatened nearby structures, including a government fuel storage depot managed by UNOC, located just meters away.
A Race Against Time
Firefighters from the Jinja Fire Department, alongside private rescue teams and local residents, worked tirelessly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.
Their efforts paid off, as no fatalities or injuries were reported. However, the warehouse and its contents suffered extensive damage, dealing a severe blow to local businesses that relied on the supplies stored there.
James Mubi, the Kiira Region Police spokesperson, acknowledged the challenges faced during the emergency response.
“The fire was uncontrollable, but we managed to contain it before it could spread further,” he said.
Challenges in Firefighting Efforts
Mubi highlighted a critical issue that hampered the firefighting efforts: the lack of adequate water hydrants in the area.
He emphasized the need for better urban planning, including the installation of water hydrants and wider alleys to ensure emergency access.
“Having a security expert on the City Physical Planning Committee is essential to guide the planning of key infrastructure,” Mubi added.
A Call for Action
The fire has sparked urgent calls for improved safety measures in Jinja, particularly for warehouses storing flammable materials. Residents and business owners are urging city authorities to address these gaps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“The impact of this fire is devastating,” said Jaffar Buyinza, a local resident. “It spread so quickly, and it’s a huge loss for everyone in this area.”
Investigation Underway
The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, and a full investigation is underway. Mubi urged anyone with relevant information to come forward to aid in the inquiry.
Moving Forward
As Jinja begins to recover from the aftermath, the focus is on rebuilding and implementing measures to enhance safety and preparedness.
The hope is that this incident will serve as a wake-up call for better infrastructure and emergency planning in the city.
The Suppliers World fire is a stark reminder of the need for better infrastructure and safety measures. Let’s hope this tragedy leads to meaningful change for Jinja and its residents.
