Man Sets Fire, Kills Wife and Baby Before Ending Own Life

A heartbreaking tragedy has left the community of Katende Triangle in Bugembe, Jinja City, in shock after a man allegedly set his room on fire, killing his wife and nine-month-old daughter before taking his own life.

What Happened?

Police identified the man as 25-year-old Edirisa Isabirye, a boda boda rider.

In the early hours of Tuesday, Isabirye reportedly placed a burning charcoal stove under the bed where his wife, 17-year-old Mirabu Kakazi, and their infant daughter, Mirabu Munana, were sleeping. The fire quickly spread, engulfing the room and claiming their lives.

After the fire, Isabirye used a bedsheet to hang himself, adding to the devastating loss.

A Troubled Relationship

Kiira Region Police spokesperson SP James Mubi revealed that preliminary investigations suggest the couple’s relationship was fraught with frequent conflicts and domestic violence.

“Reports indicate that their relationship was strained, with continuous arguments and emotional distress,” Mubi said.

He urged couples to prioritize mutual respect, trust, and open communication, emphasizing the importance of recognizing early warning signs in relationships.

“If you are in a life-threatening situation, know when to leave or seek professional help,” he advised.

Community Mourns

The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their families for burial.

Kakazi will be laid to rest in Namagera Town Council, Jinja District, while Isabirye and his daughter will be buried in Bukoma Sub-county, Luuka District.
