Makerere University has finally advertised the long-vacant positions of Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Finance and Administration.
This move comes after the government directed the Inspector General of Government (IGG) to investigate allegations of corruption and mismanagement at Uganda’s top university.
Scramble to Fill Leadership Gaps
For nearly eight years, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe left at least one of these key positions unfilled. Despite multiple attempts to appoint deputies, past selection processes either failed or were abandoned.
However, following pressure from the Ministry of Ethics and Integrity, the university has now moved swiftly to fill the roles.
On Monday, March 31st, Makerere University placed an advert in a national newspaper, inviting applications for both deputy vice-chancellor positions. The hiring process will be overseen by the University Council and Senate.
Application Process and Requirements
According to Academic Registrar Prof. Mukadasi Buyinza, applicants have two weeks to submit their credentials.
The selection will involve a rigorous evaluation of academic qualifications, leadership experience, and the candidates’ vision for the university’s future.
“Those who have already applied during previous recruitment cycles do not need to reapply,” Prof. Buyinza clarified.
Previous Failed Attempts
Over the past seven years, Makerere University has launched three search processes for deputy vice-chancellors.
Two ended in controversy, while the third was abandoned before completion. This latest recruitment drive signals a renewed effort to stabilize leadership at the prestigious institution.
