Makerere University has officially released the results of its 2025/2026 Law Pre-Entry Examination, offering clarity—and hope—to thousands of aspiring lawyers.
The exam, held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, remains a key gateway into one of Uganda’s most competitive and prestigious academic programs: the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at Makerere.
According to the University’s Academic Registrar, all candidates who scored at least 50% have passed. These successful applicants are now under consideration by the University Admissions Committee for final placement into the law program.
The results specifically cover A’ Level leavers, a category of students competing in what is widely seen as one of the most rigorous academic vetting processes in Uganda’s public university system.
Makerere’s law pre-entry exam has long been regarded as a high-stakes filter that separates qualified candidates from the broader applicant pool.
“This examination is a critical mechanism in ensuring that only the most prepared students gain entry into legal training,” said an official from the Pre-Entry and Mature Age Examination Committee, which oversees the process.
Appeals Window Now Open
Candidates who feel that their results were unfair or incorrect have two weeks from the date of release to file formal appeals with the Academic Registrar’s office.
This appeal process ensures transparency and accountability in the university’s highly respected selection system.
Why the Pre-Entry Exam Matters
Makerere’s law pre-entry exam was first introduced to standardize admissions, especially amid rising numbers of applicants and varying A’ Level performance.
The test helps level the playing field by offering a merit-based alternative that focuses on reasoning skills, legal aptitude, comprehension, and analytical thinking—qualities essential for a successful legal education.
In previous years, the pass mark has fluctuated slightly, but the 50% threshold has remained the average baseline.
This year’s adherence to that standard reflects the university’s continued commitment to academic rigor while ensuring broader accessibility.
A Stepping Stone to Uganda’s Legal Elite
Makerere University’s School of Law is Uganda’s oldest and most respected institution for legal education. Its alumni include Supreme Court justices, Members of Parliament, high-profile lawyers, and human rights advocates across the region.
Getting admitted into Makerere’s law program isn’t just an academic victory—it’s often seen as the first step toward leadership roles in Uganda’s legal, political, and civic life.
