Makerere University has officially released its government sponsorship admission list for the 2025/2026 academic year, confirming placements for thousands of top-performing students from across Uganda.

The announcement, made by the Academic Registrar’s Department, marks a critical moment for students who sat the 2024 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) exams.

This year’s intake is one of the most competitive in recent memory, with record-breaking application numbers received across all disciplines.

“We are pleased to welcome another cohort of bright minds to Makerere University,” said the Academic Registrar in a statement.

The admission list includes successful applicants across all nine colleges, including:

  • College of Health Sciences
  • College of Business and Management Sciences
  • College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology
  • College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences
  • College of Natural Sciences
  • College of Computing and Information Sciences
  • College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity
  • College of Education and External Studies
  • College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Students can verify their admission status via the official PDF (embedded below).

A Highly Contested Spot

Every year, government-sponsored slots at Makerere are limited and awarded based on national merit, making the selection process incredibly tight.

This year, more students from upcountry districts and underrepresented schools secured placements, signaling progress in regional inclusivity and education equity.

The government sponsorship covers tuition, functional fees, and living allowances, reducing financial strain for families and enabling top academic talent to thrive regardless of background.

For Kampala-based applicants, the announcement was met with excitement—and relief.

“My parents were crying when they saw my name,” said Racheal N., a Kyambogo-based student admitted into the Bachelor of Law program. “This means everything to us.”

What’s Next for the New Cohort?

Orientation week will begin in mid-August, with the official start of classes on September 1, 2025. During orientation, new students will be introduced to campus life, academic expectations, and the university’s systems.

Students are advised to prepare required documents and monitor further updates through Makerere’s official communication channels.

Uganda’s Oldest University Still Leads the Way

Founded in 1922, Makerere University has remained a beacon of academic excellence in Africa. It continues to produce leaders, innovators, and professionals who shape policy and development both locally and abroad.

With this new intake, the institution reinforces its position as a national cornerstone in higher education, even as it adapts to new challenges in a rapidly evolving academic landscape.
