Kenya’s The Standard Shifts Tone on Gen Muhoozi After Backlash

The Standard has softened its criticism of Gen Muhoozi following backlash, but his supporters remain steadfast in their plans to protest, underscoring the sensitivity surrounding his public image.

Kenyan newspaper The Standard has walked back its harsh portrayal of Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, following widespread criticism from his supporters.

Last week, the publication labeled him a “Four-Star Brat” on its front page, sparking outrage and plans for protests at the Kenyan High Commission in Kampala.

From Criticism to Conciliation

In a revised profile published on March 4, The Standard adopted a more respectful tone, acknowledging Muhoozi’s military reputation and leadership qualities.

The updated article described him as a figure who “means business,” commands respect within the ranks, and balances toughness with an appreciation for life’s finer things.

Despite this shift, supporters of the general remain unconvinced. Daudi Kabanda, Kassambya County MP and Secretary General of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), confirmed that while The Standard had issued an apology, it was still under review.

“We are analyzing this apology and will respond later. Our peaceful demonstration scheduled for tomorrow still stands,” Kabanda stated.

Protests Loom Despite Apology

The controversy began when The Standard published a scathing article that Muhoozi’s loyalists deemed disrespectful.

The Patriotic League of Uganda, a group known for its staunch support of the general, vowed to march to the Kenyan High Commission in protest.

While The Standard’s revised profile suggests a retreat from its earlier stance, it remains unclear whether this will appease Muhoozi’s supporters.

The group has a history of fiercely defending the general’s public image, and their planned demonstration indicates their dissatisfaction persists.

A Broader Context

The tension comes amid Gen Muhoozi’s recent outspoken comments on Kenya via social media platform X.

His supporters have consistently rallied behind him, viewing any criticism as an affront to Uganda’s military leadership.
