Journalists Targeted in Kawempe North By-Election Crackdown

NTV journalists  Raymond Tamale and Dennis Kabugo, narrating their ordeal after being beaten

In a shocking turn of events, four journalists covering the Kawempe North by-election were assaulted, arrested, and transported in unmarked drone vehicles by security operatives.

The journalists—Isano Francis (NBS TV), Raymond Tamale (NTV), Dennis Kabugo, and Abubaker Lubowa (Daily Monitor)—were detained while reporting from various polling stations.

Three other journalists—David Ijjo (NTV), Hassan Wasswa (NBS TV), and Hakim Wampamba (NBS TV)—managed to escape the ordeal, but not without losing critical equipment.

A Disturbing Pattern of Intimidation

Eyewitnesses reported that security forces targeted the journalists, subjecting them to physical abuse before forcibly removing them in drone vehicles—a mode of transport that has sparked widespread concern.

Canary Mugume, a senior reporter for NBS TV, described the situation as alarming.

“UPDF soldiers carrying guns are patrolling the streets in both official vehicles and drones with their number plates removed,” Mugume said. “These actions seem directed at journalists. We wonder if this is an election or a different operation.”

Equipment Seized, Press Freedom Under Threat

The journalists’ equipment was seized at multiple polling stations, leaving them with only one camera to broadcast the unfolding events.

“This is a clear attempt to stifle press freedom,” Mugume added.

The increased presence of armed UPDF soldiers and the use of unmarked drones have created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, particularly for media personnel.

This incident follows previous attacks on journalists, including Mugume and Wasswa, raising serious concerns about the safety of the press.

Calls for Accountability and Safety

Media organizations have called on authorities to prioritize the safety of journalists and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

“The targeting of journalists is unacceptable. We demand accountability and immediate action to protect the press,” said a spokesperson for NBS TV.

As the Kawempe North by-election continues, the assault on journalists has cast a dark shadow over the democratic process, highlighting the urgent need for transparency and respect for press freedom.
