Ugandan music powerhouse Jose Chameleone touched down at Entebbe International Airport on Friday to thunderous applause and emotional cheers.
After four months in the United States battling acute pancreatitis, the 45-year-old icon returned to a hero’s welcome that turned the airport into a scene of celebration.
Chameleone, born Joseph Mayanja, had been receiving intensive treatment in Boston since December 2024. His condition had sparked national concern, especially after doctors at Nakasero Hospital warned against him flying due to his fragile state.
But with strong backing from his family, the Ugandan government, and philanthropist Juliet Zawedde, the artist made the journey that proved to be life-saving.
He was met at the airport by hundreds of fans, fellow musicians, and relatives—including his brothers, Pallaso and Weasel—who embraced him in an emotional reunion.
Chameleone emerged from the terminal smiling, visibly moved by the outpouring of love. His fans broke into song and chants, waving placards and Ugandan flags as his motorcade snaked its way to the city.

“This welcome has touched me deeply,” Chameleone told the cheering crowd. “I’ve felt the strength of your prayers and love through every hard moment. I’m here today because of you.”
His triumphant return followed weeks of speculation and updates shared by his son, Abba Marcus Mayanja, who had earlier asked the public to pray for his father’s recovery.
During his treatment in the U.S., the Bayuda singer reportedly underwent specialized care including surgery, with close support from Zawedde, who took on the role of caregiver during his stay abroad.
Chameleone’s convoy received cheers all the way from Entebbe to Kampala, with fans lining the roads to catch a glimpse of the music giant. Later this evening, he is expected to hold a private celebration at an undisclosed venue with friends, family, and close associates.
His return is more than a homecoming—it’s a revival of a legend who has shaped Uganda’s music industry for over two decades. The moment has reminded many of his staying power, not just as a performer but as a symbol of resilience.
While fans were celebrating his physical return, many were also hoping it marks a fresh chapter in the singer’s life.
