When opportunity knocks, it often wears the cloak of hard work—and sometimes, a bit of dust. James Onyutta, Managing Director of FINCA Uganda, knows this all too well.
His journey from an intern tasked with cleaning files to leading one of Uganda’s most forward-thinking financial institutions is a masterclass in resilience, adaptability, and digital innovation.
From Dusting Files to Desk Job
Onyutta’s story begins at Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi, where his academic excellence opened the door to an internship at FINCA.
While his peers were diving into computer-based tasks, Onyutta found himself dusting and organizing files.
“I thought it was the crappiest job,” he admitted.
But he took on the task with unmatched speed and efficiency, earning himself a full-time role. This experience became a cornerstone of his career philosophy—no task is too small if it contributes to your growth.

Lessons from Malawi
With over 25 years in the financial sector, Onyutta’s career has taken him across borders, including a pivotal two-year stint in Malawi.
Initially intended as a four-month project, the extended stay tested his resilience.
“It taught me the importance of having the right resources and adapting quickly to new environments,” he reflected.
These lessons in flexibility would later shape his leadership at FINCA Uganda.
FINCA’s Digital Revolution
One of Onyutta’s most significant achievements at FINCA Uganda is spearheading the institution’s digital transformation.
Five years ago, he launched FINCA’s digital journey, resulting in 70% of all transactions now being digital. The TechTouch innovation ensures customers can transition smoothly into digital banking without losing the human touch.
“Getting people to move from cash to digital transactions is a mindset challenge,” Onyutta noted.
To tackle this, FINCA prioritizes financial literacy, helping ordinary Ugandans—omuntu wa wansi—embrace the benefits of digital finance.

Uganda’s Saving Culture
Onyutta is deeply concerned about Uganda’s saving culture. Many still prefer to keep their money at home, away from formal financial systems.
“We do not save enough, yet savings are key to financial security and growth,” he emphasized.
His advice is simple but powerful: “Save, save, save.”
Leadership with a Human Touch
Beyond his corporate achievements, Onyutta is a dedicated Rotarian, using his platform to uplift communities.
He’s also a music enthusiast—affectionately called Timberland by his friends from Namasagali College—and finds solace in swimming. These personal passions help him maintain a healthy work-life balance.
The Future of FINCA Uganda
Under Onyutta’s leadership, FINCA Uganda continues to innovate, prioritizing financial inclusion and digital solutions.
The institution’s mission to end poverty by expanding financial access aligns with Uganda’s broader economic transformation goals.
In a world where leadership is often defined by titles and boardrooms, Onyutta’s story is a refreshing reminder that true innovation often begins in the most unexpected places—even with a dusty file.
