High Court Postpones Besigye Bail Ruling to April 11

Dr. Kizza Besigye appearing in Kampala High Court for bail hearing

In a dramatic turn of events, the High Court in Kampala has rescheduled its ruling on the bail application of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Hajji Obeid Lutaale Kamulegeya, to April 11.

The decision comes after a tense court session today, where both the defense and prosecution clashed over timelines.

Prosecution Seeks More Time

Initially slated for today, the bail hearing was delayed after Chief State Attorneys Richard Birivumbuka and Joseph Kyomuhendo requested additional time to review affidavits submitted by Besigye’s legal team.

“The affidavits raise serious issues that require thorough scrutiny,” argued Birivumbuka, prompting Justice Rosette Kania Comfort to grant the prosecution until March 31 to file their written submissions.

Defense Presents High-Profile Sureties

Meanwhile, the defense, led by lawyers Ernest Kalibala and Erias Lukwago, moved forward with presenting sureties for Besigye and Lutaale.

Among those standing surety for Besigye are prominent legislators and longtime allies:

  • Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda (Kira Municipality MP)
  • Tonny Muhindo (Bukonzo East MP)
  • Francis Mwijukye (Buhweju County MP)
  • Nicholas Kamara (Kabale Municipality MP)

The sureties’ involvement underscores the high-stakes nature of the case, which has drawn national attention.

What’s Next?

With the prosecution’s response due by March 31, all eyes are now on Justice Kania’s ruling, set for April 11.

The decision could have far-reaching implications for Uganda’s political landscape, as Besigye remains a key figure in the opposition.
