HFB Deepens Investment in Clean Water Access for Ugandan Schools

Access to safe drinking water and sanitation remains a major challenge in many parts of Uganda, particularly in public schools.

According to UNICEF, nearly 30% of Ugandans lack access to clean drinking water, and data from the Ministry of Education and Sports shows that only 35% of primary schools have access to clean water, while more than 70% lack proper sanitation facilities.

This contributes to high rates of waterborne diseases and student absenteeism, severely affecting education and health outcomes.

HFB Launches Targeted Water and Sanitation Product

In response to this crisis, Housing Finance Bank (HFB) has launched a new Water and Sanitation product, aimed at improving water access and hygiene infrastructure in Ugandan schools and communities.

The product offers affordable financing solutions to individuals, institutions, and enterprises seeking to install water systems and sanitation facilities.

As part of the initiative, HFB has invested over UGX 8 million to install water harvesting systems at Maganjo UMEA Primary School in Nansana Municipality and Kadugala Secondary School in Masaka.

These installations now benefit over 1,000 students, ensuring consistent access to clean water for drinking and hygiene.

Investing in Community Well-being

“This initiative is part of our broader strategy to improve water access, sanitation, and hygiene in underserved communities across Uganda,” said Peace Ayebazibwe, Executive Director of Housing Finance Bank.

“Through partnerships with organizations like WaterQuip, we are ensuring clean water solutions are not only available—but sustainable. This benefits the schools and the wider community.”

The bank is committed to solving the twin challenges of inadequate clean water and poor sanitation, especially in rural areas where the impacts are most severe.

The installed systems do more than just provide clean water—they also reduce the spread of disease, boost student attendance, and enhance overall community health.

Supporting Uganda’s Development and the Global SDGs

HFB’s investment aligns with Uganda’s development goals and supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly:

  • Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being
  • Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

By tackling water insecurity and hygiene challenges, the bank contributes to building a healthier and more resilient Uganda.
