Residents of Kito village in Matugga, Gombe Division, are living in fear after a surge in gang violence claimed the life of 21-year-old Godfrey Kabajja.
The young man was fatally attacked by a notorious youth gang known as the Bakasolo group, sparking outrage and calls for urgent action from local authorities.
A Tragic Attack
Kabajja was on his way home when he was ambushed by the gang. Witnesses report that the assailants struck him on the head with a stone, leaving him critically injured.
He was rushed to Mulago Hospital but succumbed to his injuries before arrival.
The attack has left the community in shock, with many accusing the police of failing to curb the escalating criminal activities in the area.
Residents claim the Bakasolo group has been operating openly, targeting people near a local water company and a church.
Outrage and Frustration
Eseza Nanyange, Kabajja’s mother, expressed her frustration with the lack of police action.
“We have repeatedly reported these criminals to the police, but nothing has been done. They are well known in the area, yet they continue to attack innocent people,” she said.
Local leaders, including Gombe Division Mayor Ronald Kasirivu Kabembula, have condemned the violence and called for immediate intervention.
“This senseless killing must stop. We need the police to act decisively to protect our community,” Kabembula stated.
Police Response
While police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, residents remain skeptical. Many believe that without swift and decisive action, the violence will only escalate.
Addressing the Root Causes
The killing has reignited concerns over youth unemployment and its link to crime. Residents are urging authorities to tackle the root causes of gang violence, including lack of opportunities for young people, to prevent further loss of life.
A Community in Fear
As Kito village mourns the loss of Kabajja, the broader issue of gang violence looms large. The community is calling for a coordinated effort between law enforcement, local leaders, and residents to restore safety and peace.
