GM Sugar Factory Worker Crushed to Death by Sugar Mill

Work at GM Sugar Factory in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District, came to a standstill after a horrific accident claimed the life of Samuel Kasumba, a factory supervisor.

Kasumba was crushed to death by a running sugar mill during his night shift on March 12, 2025.

The incident occurred at around 3:50 AM while Kasumba was reportedly cleaning an old boiler that was still operational. The machine pulled him in, killing him instantly.

His body was taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Workers Protest Over Safety Concerns

Following the tragic accident, workers downed their tools in protest, highlighting repeated workplace accidents at the factory.

Reports indicate that at least three workers have died at GM Sugar Factory in the past year, with several others sustaining injuries.

The protest underscores growing concerns over the factory’s safety protocols and working conditions.

Police Launch Investigation

The Njeru Division Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to Kasumba’s death and to assess the factory’s safety measures.

Authorities have urged factory management to enforce stricter safety protocols and ensure compliance with industrial regulations to prevent further tragedies.
