Uganda’s Women’s National Basketball Team, the Gazelles, has received a significant boost ahead of the AfroBasket 2025 tournament, thanks to sponsorships from PostBank Uganda and Crown Beverages Limited (CBL).
The support, announced during Women’s Day celebrations, highlights the team’s resilience and their role in putting Ugandan basketball on the global map.
A Triumph Worth Celebrating
The Gazelles secured their spot in AfroBasket 2025 after a thrilling victory against Egypt, showcasing their determination and skill.
The tournament, scheduled for July 27 to August 3, 2025, in Ivory Coast, will bring together Africa’s top teams to compete for continental glory.
PostBank Uganda and CBL’s sponsorship comes at a crucial time, providing both financial and in-kind support to help the team prepare.
“This partnership is about empowering women and celebrating excellence,” said Priscilla Akora, Head of Marketing and Communications at PostBank Uganda.
Hydration and Inspiration
Crown Beverages Limited, through its Nivana brand, is donating 400 cartons of water to ensure the Gazelles stay hydrated during training and competition.
“With temperatures soaring, hydration is key to peak performance,” noted Againe Sandra, CBL’s Corporate Communications Manager.
The sponsorship aligns with the 2025 International Women’s Day theme, “Accelerate Action,” emphasizing the importance of supporting women in sports.
A Unified Push for Women’s Sports
The Gazelles’ journey has inspired many, and this sponsorship is a testament to their growing influence.
Mrs. Ainematsiko Racheal Atuhairwe, Women’s Commissioner under the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA), expressed her gratitude:
“This support is timely and crucial. It not only aids the Gazelles’ preparations but also shines a spotlight on women’s sports, which often lack the attention they deserve.”
Akello Hope Agnes, the team’s Deputy Captain, echoed this sentiment: “This recognition motivates us to aim higher and represent Uganda with pride. We’re also excited to inspire young girls and women through upcoming activations.”
What’s Next for the Gazelles?
With AfroBasket 2025 on the horizon, the Gazelles are focused on rigorous training and preparation.
The tournament serves as a qualifier for the FIBA Women’s World Cup and the Olympic Games, offering a chance to elevate Ugandan basketball to new heights.
