Former Makerere University ICT Director, Frank Kitumba, and his family were brutally attacked by thugs who broke into their campus residence in the early hours of the morning.

The attack happened at around 3 a.m. when the assailants, allegedly led by a man identified as Henry Katabira, stormed the home located opposite the College of Computing and Information Sciences. The criminals restrained the family, assaulted them, and threatened them against raising an alarm.

Reports circulating on university WhatsApp groups indicate that the thugs loaded household items onto a truck, destroyed valuables they couldn’t take, and then drove away. Kampala Town could not independently verify these allegations.

A Second Targeted Attack

This is the second time in two months that Kitumba has been targeted. In the previous attack, his home was vandalized, and his car windows were smashed using pickhoes and hammers.

Kitumba has been entangled in a long-standing dispute with Makerere University over compensation. The conflict stemmed from the university’s refusal to renew his contract, and despite a court ruling reinstating him, financial disagreements persisted.

Sources allege that instead of remitting his National Social Security Fund (NSSF) contributions, the university deposited UGX 60 million into a separate Makerere University Retirement Benefits Scheme account, a figure he disputed.

Investigation and Arrests

Following the latest attack, authorities traced the stolen property to Wandegeya, where some items were transferred to a drone and later moved to Kajansi. Police intercepted the truck carrying the stolen goods and arrested several suspects.

A case of robbery has been registered at Wandegeya Police Station under SD-REF-02/02/04/25, listing Henry Katabira as the main suspect alongside other accomplices.

Kitumba, who sustained injuries, received medical treatment at Wandegeya Medical Chambers.

Concerns are growing over the rising cases of targeted violence and robbery at Makerere University, with residents questioning campus security. Notably, despite a police patrol passing by during the attack, no immediate intervention was made.

The police have yet to release an official statement on the incident. Investigations are ongoing.
