Equity Bank has launched the second edition of its flagship initiative, Abakyala Ku Ntiiko (Women Ahead), aimed at empowering women in micro and small-scale businesses.
Held in Kampala under the theme “Accelerating Action For Prosperity in Business,” the event brought together hundreds of women entrepreneurs, financial experts, and industry leaders to share insights on financial literacy, networking, business financing, and small business management.
Following the success of its inaugural edition in 2024, the initiative reaffirms Equity Bank’s commitment to supporting female entrepreneurship and overcoming financial barriers.
A Day of Learning and Recognition
The event featured interactive sessions where women gained practical knowledge to scale and thrive in their businesses.
Equity Bank Managing Director Gift Shoko emphasized the importance of networking, stating, “We believe that when women are financially empowered, they uplift families and communities as a whole.”
The day culminated in an award ceremony, recognizing outstanding women in categories such as Most Consistent Saver, Best Loan Payer, and Biggest Supporter of the Bank.
Tailored Solutions for Women
Laura Bahemuka, Equity Bank’s Head of Micro Segment, highlighted the unique challenges women face, including juggling multiple responsibilities and systemic barriers like gender discrimination.
To address these, Equity Bank offers tailored products like the Equi-Mama suite, which includes personalized financial planning, investment advice, and insurance coverage.
The Equi-Mama product also provides medical insurance covering maternal health, long-term illness, permanent disability, and life insurance.
“Financial independence gives women the confidence to make their own decisions and support their families and communities,” Bahemuka said.

Success Stories
A highlight of the event was a testimonial panel featuring women who benefited from the program’s first edition.
Jane Nalubowa, who runs four businesses, shared her journey: “I learned how to manage my finances better and access affordable credit. Today, my business has grown, and I am now employing more women in my community.”
The Bigger Picture: Women Driving Uganda’s Economy
According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), nearly 40% of small and medium-sized enterprises in Uganda are owned by women.
These businesses employ millions and support hundreds of households, underscoring the critical role women play in driving economic growth.
Through Abakyala Ku Ntiiko, Equity Bank is not only empowering individual women but also contributing to the broader economic development of Uganda.
