Uganda Breweries Limited has launched the Diageo Bar Academy training program, aiming to raise service standards in Uganda’s hospitality sector.

The initiative will equip 1,650 bartenders and bar staff in Kampala with essential skills, reinforcing Uganda’s position as a competitive hospitality destination.

According to Roy Tumwizere, Head of Advocacy at Uganda Breweries Limited, the program is designed to enhance service quality, career development, and guest experiences, ultimately boosting the sector’s profitability and sustainability.

“The hospitality sector is one of the largest employers in Uganda, and its growth directly impacts the economy,” Tumwizere stated.

The Diageo Bar Academy training program focuses on mixology, customer engagement, responsible service, and business acumen. It aligns with Uganda’s broader efforts to improve service quality and support the tourism sector’s expansion.

In 2023, Uganda’s tourism industry welcomed 1.27 million international visitors, achieving an 82% recovery from pre-pandemic levels.

Studies indicate that businesses investing in staff training see a 20-30% rise in repeat customer visits, while trained bartenders demonstrate a 35% improvement in cocktail preparation skills. The academy has consistently contributed to higher customer satisfaction and improved job retention rates.

A key focus of the program is increasing women’s participation in the hospitality industry, promoting gender equality, and expanding career opportunities for women.

With Uganda’s growing middle class driving demand for premium dining experiences, well-trained professionals are essential to meeting evolving consumer expectations. Currently, 39.2% of Ugandans regularly dine out, emphasizing the need for skilled hospitality workers.

“The service industry is evolving rapidly, with consumers seeking premium experiences,” Tumwizere noted. “Through this training, we are empowering hospitality professionals to elevate guest experiences, leading to greater industry growth.”

The Diageo Bar Academy has a proven track record of enhancing service quality. Previous cohorts have reported increased job retention, higher earnings, and improved customer satisfaction ratings.

Run under the Uganda Breweries Learning for Life initiative, the program offers young individuals a lucrative career path in hospitality.

Over 5,000 bartenders have been trained, gaining practical business and hospitality skills to boost their employability.

By equipping Uganda’s hospitality workforce with world-class expertise, the Diageo Bar Academy is shaping a more professional and competitive service industry, ensuring long-term growth and excellence.
