For the first time in its 90-year history, Absa Bank Uganda has appointed a Ugandan national—David Wandera—as its Managing Director.

His appointment, effective May 5, 2025, marks a transformative moment in the country’s financial sector and signals a shift toward empowering homegrown leadership in major institutions.

Wandera takes over following regulatory approval from the Bank of Uganda. His rise to the top job at Absa is not only symbolic—it’s strategic.

He assumes leadership of a financially strong and well-capitalised bank, one positioned firmly in Uganda’s top tier by both revenue and profitability.

David Wandera is no stranger to Absa or to leadership. A Chartered Accountant (FCCA – UK) with a Master’s degree in International Finance from the University of Leeds, he has more than 20 years of experience in finance, business strategy, and stakeholder relations.

Before his appointment as Managing Director, Wandera served as the bank’s Executive Director, where he led several key operational reforms.

These efforts drove efficiency, expanded market share, and strengthened Absa Uganda’s competitive position in a crowded banking environment.

Board Chairman Keith Kalyegira described Wandera as the right leader for the moment.

“David brings a deep understanding of customer needs, a strong ethical foundation, and a clear vision for growth,” Kalyegira said. “We are confident his leadership will drive meaningful value for customers, communities, and shareholders.”

Wandera himself struck a tone of humility and ambition as he assumed the new role.

“It is a great honour to lead Absa Bank Uganda at this pivotal time,” he said. “I’m excited by our legacy and the future ahead. My focus is on deepening trust, advancing innovation, and driving inclusive growth across Uganda.”

His vision aligns with Absa’s broader strategy: expanding digital banking, enhancing SME financing, and investing in customer-focused solutions.

In a landscape where local responsiveness is increasingly critical, Wandera’s appointment places a Ugandan at the helm of a bank transforming to meet uniquely Ugandan challenges.

Absa Bank Uganda—formerly Barclays Uganda—has undergone sweeping changes in recent years. Wandera’s promotion signals a maturing sector where Ugandans are now trusted to steer the course of major financial institutions.

This appointment is more than a personal achievement; it’s a powerful signal that local talent is ready to lead, innovate, and inspire across the continent.

“The Board and entire Absa team are excited to work with David,” said a bank official. “This is a new chapter in our story of empowering Africa’s tomorrow.”
