Piles of rubble and broken structures in Kalangala’s hardest-hit neighborhoods

A ferocious cyclone has left Kalangala District in ruins, with at least four confirmed deaths, over 300 homes destroyed, and the Central Police Station reduced to rubble.

The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) has identified three victims and is providing urgent medical care to 13 injured survivors at Kalangala Health Centre IV.

Victims Identified Amid Widespread Destruction

The cyclone, marked by violent winds and torrential rains, struck with little warning, devastating communities across the island district. Among the deceased are:

  • Hassan Waswa, a local barber
  • Geoffrey Sekiwere, a porter
  • An unnamed police sergeant

The URCS has deployed emergency teams to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts.

Rescue and Relief Efforts Underway

Irene Nakasiita, spokesperson for the Uganda Red Cross, confirmed that teams are working closely with the Office of the Prime Minister to evaluate the extent of the destruction.

“This is a devastating situation. Our team is already on-site, assessing the impact and determining what support is required,” Nakasiita said.

Assessments are ongoing in Kifuufu, Kanyogoga, Bugala, and Mweena, with a full report expected soon.
