The Boda Boda industry, Uganda’s second-largest employer, is revving its engines for a major transformation!
The United Boda Boda Cooperative Union has unveiled the National Boda Boda Stage Development Model – an initiative designed to empower riders and unlock financial independence. Buckle up, because this is one wild ride towards a brighter future.
From Passengers to Financially Empowered Professionals
This isn’t your average motorcycle taxi service anymore. The Boda Boda industry is shedding its informal image and embracing professionalization.
The National Boda Boda Stage Development Model, supported by the Ugandan government, is a multi-pronged attack on the challenges riders face:
👉 Limited access to financial services? Say goodbye to predatory lenders! The SACCO transformation into a bank will provide riders with much-needed financial tools.
👉 High accident rates? Safety first! Training programs will promote responsible riding and reduce road risks.
👉 Environmental blues? Go green! The initiative encourages the adoption of electric Boda Bodas for a cleaner commute.
This model is a win-win for everyone. Riders gain financial security, the government benefits from organized tax collection, and Ugandans enjoy safer, more sustainable rides.
Here’s How it Works
The National Boda Boda Stage Development Model packs a punch with a variety of programs:
1. The Power of SACCOs
Riders can contribute a daily fee (Shs1,000) to a collective fund, fostering financial inclusion and enabling investments. Part of this contribution even goes towards local governments, making riders true partners in national development.
2. Financing & Leasing
Boda Boda stages can acquire motorcycles for as low as Shs70,000, empowering them to lease these out within their communities and expand their reach.
3. The Union App
Forget about sky-high commissions! This innovative app allows riders to pay a weekly subscription fee (Shs5,000) with no deductions, while also enabling them to negotiate fares directly with passengers.

But wait, there’s more!
The Boda Boda union isn’t just about business. They’re fostering a sense of community through:
a) A Songwriting Competition: Calling all musically inclined riders! The union is hosting a competition with over Shs250 million in prizes, celebrating their creativity and talent.
b) An Annual Boda Boda Festival: This festival recognizes riders’ contributions to society, providing a platform to showcase skills, engage with partners, and strengthen community bonds.
