Emmanuel Bunkedeko, a boda boda operator from Mityana, has secured a full scholarship at Nexus International University, bringing him closer to his lifelong goal of becoming a secondary school teacher.

For years, Bunkedeko navigated the busy streets of Mityana, balancing his work at Katimba stage with his passion for education. Despite financial struggles, he completed his Senior Six exams last year, scoring 10 points.

However, the cost of university remained an insurmountable hurdle—until his story reached the right ears.

On February 17th, news on Bunkedeko’s journey broke, highlighting his determination to return to school at 41. This caught the attention of Nexus International University, which immediately took action.

“We sent a team to find him,” said Davis Masaba, the university registrar. “His perseverance inspired us. Seeing someone juggle work and studies at his age, we knew we had to help.”

The university awarded him a three-year scholarship to pursue a degree in education. Bunkedeko, accompanied by his mother and fellow boda boda riders, officially received the scholarship in a moment of joy for his entire community.

“Education is the key to a brighter future,” Bunkedeko said. “This opportunity means everything to me, and I will use it to make a difference.”

Mityana’s Central Division boda boda chairman, Matovu Hussein, praised Bunkedeko’s determination.

“He’s proven that education and hard work can open doors, no matter where you start.”

A married father of four, Bunkedeko acknowledged that many Ugandans face similar struggles in accessing higher education.

“There are so many people with big dreams but no support. I’m grateful for this chance and hope to inspire others.”

Nexus International University Vice-Chancellor Magnus Amagirionwu commended the media’s role in changing lives.

“Kampala Town has shown how storytelling can create real impact. We want them to follow Bunkedeko’s journey until the day he stands in a classroom as a teacher. I want to be alive to see that moment.”

Formerly known as Virtual University of Uganda, Nexus International University was founded in 2011 as Uganda’s first fully online university.

Located in Ttamu, Mityana Municipality, it offers flexible, technology-driven education for students across Africa and beyond.

Bunkedeko’s story is a testament to resilience, the power of community, and the impact of storytelling. His journey is just beginning, and for Mityana, he’s already a hero.
