Airtel Money’s new virtual card, powered by Mastercard, enables Ugandans to shop globally, driving financial inclusion and digital transformation.
Airtel Money Uganda, in collaboration with Mastercard, has introduced a groundbreaking virtual card that allows customers to shop at over 100 million merchants across 200 countries.
This innovative product transforms mobile money accounts into a global payment tool, enabling seamless transactions for Ugandans both locally and internationally.
A Game-Changer for Digital Payments
Japhet Aritho, Managing Director of Airtel Money Uganda, described the virtual card as a revolutionary step in digital finance.
“This card gives customers total control, allowing anyone with a mobile phone to purchase products anywhere in the world,” he said.
Aritho emphasized that the card is designed to meet the needs of Airtel Money’s 16 million customers, particularly as smartphone penetration continues to rise in Uganda.
“We’ve observed other products and created something that offers the best service. The world is moving toward virtual solutions, and this card aligns perfectly with that trend,” he added.
Driving Financial Inclusion Through Partnerships
The launch of the virtual card underscores the power of strategic partnerships. Godfrey Ssebaana, CEO of Diamond Trust Bank (DTB), highlighted the importance of collaboration in advancing financial inclusion.
“Our mandate is to make transactions easier for Ugandans. Telecom companies like Airtel have deep penetration, especially among the unbanked, making them ideal partners for such innovations,” he explained.
Ssebaana also hinted at future innovations, stating that the partnership with Airtel Money and Mastercard will pave the way for additional products to enhance customer convenience.
