Airtel Uganda has teamed up with Mogo Uganda, a financial technology company under the Eleving Group, to launch a bold initiative aimed at expanding smartphone access across the country.

During the launch event held at Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, Airtel Uganda Managing Director Soumendra Sahu emphasized the growing necessity of smartphones in everyday life.

He revealed that under the new partnership, customers can acquire smartphones by paying only 28% of the phone’s cost upfront, with the rest financed on loan.

“A smartphone is no longer a luxury—it’s a gateway to opportunities, education, innovation, and economic empowerment,” Sahu said. “This partnership is key to driving digital and financial inclusion across Uganda.”

Airtel Money to Simplify Loan Repayments

Japhet Aritho, Managing Director of Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited, explained that Airtel Money will play a central role in the repayment process. With a few clicks, customers can use their mobile wallets to make installment payments from anywhere in the country.

“This partnership ensures access to credit for everyone, which is a vital component of true financial inclusion,” Aritho noted.

Smartphones as Tools for Development

Modestus Sudnuius, CEO of Eleving Group, the parent company of Mogo, said that smartphones have evolved into basic necessities, especially in fast-developing nations like Uganda.

“Uganda is a youthful and fast-developing market. With smartphones, people can tap into global knowledge and technology, accelerating the country’s economic development,” Sudnuius said.

The initiative is expected to benefit thousands of Ugandans by breaking financial barriers to smartphone ownership. By easing access to digital tools, the partnership aligns with national efforts to enhance education, job creation, entrepreneurship, and financial inclusion.
